Riverside Awarded Grant from Moderna Charitable Foundation to Expand 24/7 Community Crisis Stabilization Services in Norwood

Site will add much-needed overnight accommodations  for those experiencing a behavioral health crisis

Moderna Charitable Foundation

Dedham, MA — Riverside Community Care, a nonprofit leader in behavioral healthcare and human services, recently received a grant from the Moderna Charitable Foundation to support the expansion of Riverside’s 24/7 Community Crisis Stabilization (CCS) and Respite services. The grant helped Riverside purchase a home in Norwood, Massachusetts, for its CCS program, which provides six overnight beds for adults aged 18 and over seeking assistance during a mental health or substance use crisis.

CCS services are a voluntary, overnight alternative to inpatient psychiatric hospitalization for adults experiencing mental health or substance use crises. At the CCS home, residents can access group therapy and individual counseling in a safe, home-like setting. Riverside’s CCS programs are staffed 24/7 by behavioral health clinicians, nurses, trained counselors, and certified peer specialists. People served receive treatment planning, case management, medication evaluations, and peer support, with a typical stay of three to five days.

CCS can be vital in the aftermath of a behavioral health crisis, and comfortable overnight accommodations combined with therapeutic services can help a person in need regain balance while remaining close to home. Taking the place of inpatient hospitalization whenever possible and clinically appropriate, CCS can also mitigate the strain on hospital emergency departments and inpatient psychiatric units, where the wait for services can be lengthy.

MassHealth plans and some commercial insurers cover the CCS program. People can be referred to CCS through Riverside’s Mobile Crisis Intervention (1-781-769-8670) or from an emergency department or inpatient behavioral health unit.

“We are incredibly grateful to the Moderna Charitable Foundation for strengthening Riverside’s overnight crisis services through the acquisition of a site close to our Community Behavioral Health Center in Norwood,” said Marsha Medalie, CEO of Riverside Community Care. “This sustainable, community-based crisis stabilization program will complement our existing mental healthcare infrastructure and enhance the comfort and care of people in need.”
